I've really only found 1 build that's good for alchemist, which is Quick Bomber, Sticky Bomb, Calculated Splash & Expanded Splash. With that combo, they can outdamage even a Fighter (on average, assuming persistent lasts 4 rounds) on the first round of combat.
Especially at lv1-2, alchemist is pain. You have very little resources and very little of it can be used to generate sustain - and since your strength is in minor, but sustained effects, lacking both resource and sustain is a deadly combo. You get around it by… using a weapon. Which almost nobody does, hence the pain. Hobgoblin, quick bomber, Int 18, dex 16. I can say without a doubt the Alchemist is the weakest class in the game. It doesn't have the versatility of skills like the bard and rogue. The damage of bombs scale slightly worse/on par with cantrips/weapons, but to get that scaling you need to sacrifice feats and versatility. Each time you gain a level, you can swap one of your signature items with another formula in your formula book. This new signature item must be on your research field's list of possible signature items. Without that last line, every Alchemist could have two extra items that they can create three-ofs that isn't supported by their research field.
