Light armor reduces damage only a bit, but allows you to run or climb longer and evade for less stamina. It is favored by people who prefer to evade damage instead of soaking it. Heavy armor reduces damage a lot, it can multiply your effective HP, but you can't really dodge in it. Medium armor is the compromise.
