Sounds like the dirt you're trying to feed the harvester is too tough. Maybe you're giving it the wrong tier of dirt? T1 Harvester can only process T1 dirt. T2 Harvester can process T1 and T2 dirt. OMG THANK YOU SO MUCH. we're absolute idiots, we have spent over 2 hours trying to figure it out even buying a second one.

You can use a logic weight reader to see how much you have in the smelter. As far as using the smelter to get a specific weight when you choose. I don't think that is possible. That is what the logic saw is for. Is to cut down bars and gems to specific size. The smelter just spits out whatever is in the holding tank. #1.

In non-vein dirt, Gold and Iron have the highest occurrence rate, while Shard is the 3rd most frequent, with Corestone and Cloutium being least likely. A Cloutium Vein, I believe will have a similar rate of Dirt containing Cloutium as it is to contain Gold or Iron.
