If I hit the rear diff switch the REAR DIFF light goes out and then ABS and SLIP come on. I can hear the 4wd engage both high and low when I turn it on with my door open. Same issue with my 05 Xterra. While I agree the VDC has nothing to do with dying, I'm having similar missfiring, shutting down and running again. The VDC is also lighting up occasionally as this occurs. Replaced both CPS sensors with Nissan ones. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Put the original Brake switch back in. Then after 15 mins of the negative battery being left off, then connect and see if that clears it up. The slip light can mean different things at different times. If you are in dirt in 4wd and loose traction, the slip light will flash. This is the ABLS doing it's thing by grabbing the slipping wheel to transfer power to the opposite wheel.
