Maverick 88 vs remington 870.
Its not cheaply built, it's simply a well built gun at a good price. It's considered to be considerably better than the current Remington 870 Express as far as steel used, reliability, etc. Google it. I debated over whether to go with the Maverick 88 or H&R, and after doing a lot of reading, I decided to get the H&R.

It is probably the best selling pump shotgun of all time, and for the money is the best shotgun bargain in history, inflation being what it's been. It is a "real" shotgun. But if you can get an 870 from before Remington quality took a dip it should be fine. They've both got crossbolt safeties so the biggest difference is probably the magazine capacity (Mav holds 5, 870 holds 4) and the ability to take a tube extension (870 can with some work, Mav can't).
