Mercury 60 hp bigfoot problems.
I went for one of the last outings yesterday with my 2008 Whaler and Mercury 60-HP BIGFOOT. All season long I quite often had problems running at 1,400 to 2,000-RPM and anywhere in between, a swing of 400 to 600-RPM. When I tried she would constantly, every one or two seconds, fluctuate between these two engine speeds.

This was a few weeks after the typical 100 hour maintenance package where the spark plugs and fuel filter were changed. It appears to miss or stutter slightly between 1,200 and 2,500-RPM.
In a nutshell, when I power my engine over 4900 RPMs, I frequently hear the infamous 6 beeps from the guardian system. The engine doesn’t lose power or performance when this happens. This started late last year so I asked my Mercury service technician to see if they could fix it when I had it in for winterization.

If the tach is properly set (6P) then either the engine is not making full power or there is some excess drag on the boat. 40/50/60 HP Big Foot pontoon motors typically can run 14 x 9 to 14 x 13 four blade pontoon props. Pontoon props (Mercury makes one) have big rounded ears and provide the push a pontoon needs. I've never seen one fail on that model in the last 15 years as a Mercury tech. Make sure you are firing on all cylinders. Start the motor up, take a good pair of insulated pliers and pull the spark plug boots off of the plugs (very easy to do on this model) the motor might quit or drop 300-400 RPM. Well, I just figured it out and now it steers real easy. There is a screw on the starboard side of the pivot housing. Back that screw out about 1/4 turn and see if that's it. #1. I have recently purchased a 2007 Mercury 60 hp 4-stroke EFI, and it is unable to get over 4000rpm - although out of gear it can easily get to 6000. I know that it has some kind of protection system, perhaps this has triggered? How best to untrigger this? It will need a full overhaul, new impeller etc perhaps its is overheating slightly?
