May as well add, I was looking at a 2005 S40 w/ 160k miles, 6sp. and a 2006 S40 AT w/ 190k miles. Both ~4-5k and seemingly well maintained. I've heard volvos are reliable, but I don't know what kind of maintenaince I Would expect from high mileage volvos. Little things I can handle, replacement trans/top end work is harder to stomach.
