The later early models and on only have 2 reverse gears that are sped up. The the early ones, 1st reverse is the same speed as 3rd forward, 2nd reverse is like 5th and 3rd reverse is like 7th. I run a 64 4020 gas, first year for 4020 so your late 4010 would be a 63. The aluminum carb was a real bad deal, the big iron carb with vacuum accelerator pump was not much better. In my opinion the carb on the 4020 was much oversize for the application and runs poor at anything but full load.Owner replaced generator with alternator because the 4020 is indeed a hoss. Designed to run on row crops all day at full speed. Off and on hay use would not keep the batteries charged. Alternator supposed to charge better at slower speeds and shorter run times. John Deere 4020 Gas with “New” CarbFeb 14, 2021. #1. Directly behind the oil pressure gauge is a small hole in the governor housing. Oil will go through that hole and run down a trough to the oil tube. Remove the oil pressure gauge and take a small stiff piece of wire and you can unclog the hole. I had the same issue with a 37 A. It takes some. patience but it can be done. OP.

Well-known Member. Nov 3, 2009. #1. I have an early 4020 and I just put an overhaul kit in the brake valve. I put everything back together following my JD service manual. Then I bleed the brakes. Now the brakes are totally locked up. The tractor won't move. But if I open the bleed screws, it will move.

Dec 13, 2007 · Hello all, Have a problem with my 4020. This past summer - if the tractor sat for more than 2-3 days...it wouldnt start. At the time - was a 24v system. 1st thing I did was replace the battery's - 2 brand new JD 12v's. Seemed to help for awhile - but not long and was back to not starting... Went from a quad-range to powershift. When new the 4640 could not do the work of the 4630. After a year we found there was a program to redo the torque capsule in the injection pump. Deere had the wrong-headed idea that a torgue curve should be flat and accomplished it by taking off high end governor response.Total for the rebuild was $700 but was still cheaper than buying a reman brake valve, at least according to the local JD dealer anyway. Good News....the original brake valve was rebuildable. It solved the entire problem and it stops great. No more wheel lock up. The JD 4020 is now ready to go back to work.Tractor. 4020 John Deere. Makes for really hard cranking when they are stuck advanced or the springs have rusted off.
